Mean, Median, and Mode

There may be a couple of statistic questions in the examination. Kaya it’ll pay to brush up on these simple concepts-the mean, mode, median, and range.

So, how do you solve for them? Here’s how:

  • Mean = Average. All you have to do is to add all of the scores and divide it by the number of scores. For example: 3, 4, and 5 will give you a mean of 4 because (3+4+5) divided by 3 is 4.
  • Mode = The score with the most repetitions. In short, yung pinakasikat or uso. For example: 3, 4, 4, and 5 will have a mode of 4 because there are 2 4s and just one each of 3 and 5.
  • Median = Middle. Write all of the scores in ascending order and pick the number in the middle spot. For example: 3, 4, 5, will give you a median of 4 because it is the middle number.
  • Range = The largest score minus the smallest score. For example: 3, 4, and 5 will have a range of 2 because 5 – 3 is 2.

It’s time to put that into practice. Here are a couple of worksheets to get you started.

Polynomials Worksheets #1

I know, I know, there’s no way that we can use this concept in real life. It’s not like we need to know how to factor special polynomials in order to buy stuff from the supermarket or calculate the amount of tax we need to pay. Yun nga lang, kasama pa rin ito sa Civil Service Exam.

Pero, if you don’t understand how to solve these problems, that doesn’t mean that you won’t pass the test. Usually, there’s just one or two questions about polynomials sa exam. As long as you have a solid grasp on the other topics, you’re good to go.

Fractions Operations

For something that we learned early in our school life, fraction still proves to be one of the trickiest topics for most of the students I meet. That’s a problem that can easily be solved by practice. Here are my video lessons that you can watch for free to learn about fractions.

Here are worksheets to help you practice solving problems involving fractions.

Building Your Vocabulary #1: Tips

Having a wide vocabulary is a big part of passing the examination. You won’t just need it for the language section. You’ll use it for word problems, you’ll use it for the verbal reasoning questions. That’s why it’s so important to build your vocabulary.

How can you do that? Here are my tips.

Now, some of you asked me for a list of books that I can recommend. Here are a few books and book series that can get you started. I have copies of most of these in my personal library.

  1. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  2. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
  3. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
  4. Stardust by Neil Gaiman
  5. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
  6. Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach
  7. The Giver by Lois Lowry
