Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

This is something that was taught to us when we were in high school. It’s something that some of us understood really well, but most had a hard time with. We are going to talk about it because it’s something that always shows up in the Civil Service Exam.

You can practice using the techniques you learned by answering these free worksheets:

Order of Operations Worksheet Set #1

Order of operations is one of the easiest types of questions na pwedeng lumabas sa exam. It’s also one of the easiest questions to get wrong. That’s because the discipline of following the correct order in solving the problems takes a lot of practice. You have to be so in tune with the rules of operations that they’re second nature to you.

So, ano ba ang tamang order?

  1. Parentheses
  2. Exponents
  3. Multiplication/Division
  4. Addition/Subtraction

If walang parentheses na nakalagay, place them yourself. That will help you prioritize the correct steps.

Here’s a set of five worksheets with increasing difficulty. Start with Worksheet #1 and move down.

Polynomials Worksheets #1

I know, I know, there’s no way that we can use this concept in real life. It’s not like we need to know how to factor special polynomials in order to buy stuff from the supermarket or calculate the amount of tax we need to pay. Yun nga lang, kasama pa rin ito sa Civil Service Exam.

Pero, if you don’t understand how to solve these problems, that doesn’t mean that you won’t pass the test. Usually, there’s just one or two questions about polynomials sa exam. As long as you have a solid grasp on the other topics, you’re good to go.
